Hotel Zags started life as a 1960s motor lodge, back when Portland road trips came with neon signs, easy parking, and happy hours that included $1 oyster shooters. It was the kind of place that didn’t try too hard, because it didn’t need to.
Reopened in 2019, the property kept its laid-back spirit while updating everything around it. Today, the 174-room hotel blends retro roots with a playful, city-explorer mindset. KEX first started in 2011, when a businessman and a set designer met at an abandoned biscuit factory in a strange corner of Reykjavík while scouting a location for an upcoming film. While the movie never got made, the vision for the set remained.
